A little over 70 years ago, the train that a schoolfriend and I were on came off the rails in the Simplon Tunnel.

We never got to Italy but I wasn’t dead, as one newspaper back home reported me as being.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which I now suffer from, won’t kill me either, but it does make holding a pen impossible and typing both painful and laborious.

It is comforting to remember that many years ago my friend Bill Vollmann also had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but recovered to produce a life’s work of Dickensian proportions.

And it has amused me to find that no bank has queried what Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has done to my signature. It seems any old squiggle is good enough for them.
